Could I Support a Family good becoming a Police Officer?

See i always kind of wanted to be one, but ive heard so and so things about how income isnt that great. but would i be able to support my fiance and eventaully children and buy a descent house and what not? What should i go into if i dont really want to write parking tickets but rather be more undercover most the time, but not too dangerous where as my life expectancy is like a few years? any advice is appreciated. thankx
