Starting Yasmin birth control, wondering if I can start them early?

I know the ideal way to start taking Yasmin birth control is the Sunday after your period starts or the day your period starts. However, I have something going on next week that I'd rather not have my period for. Can I start taking the pills this week to avoid getting my period next week or am I just going to screw up my system and end up spotting anyway? I haven't been on birth control in over 10 years. Please don't tell me to ask my doctor, I'd like to hear from people here with experience or knowledge on the subject
