Does religion hold the human race back and why/why not?

You are seeing only see one side of the coin. Yes religion brought many bad things: war, murder, abuse, pride, torture, materialism. But also: peace, tolerance, happiness, civilization, help, solace, trust. It depends on who uses it and what for. You cannot generalize and put the people that abuse religion in the same category as those who do great things with it.
